Mission to Egypt

April 2000 - September 2001

Week of October 15, 2000

Mokattam Hills, Cairo.

"We took a sightseeing trip to a part of Cairo that few people ever go. The area is called Mokattam Hills. The Christians have built cathedrals into the side of the hills where there were big caves. The largest holds about 20,000 people. It's like an amphitheater open at the back, with most of the bleachers covered by the overhang of the mountain."

Nativity Scene

"They have all kinds of New Testament scenes carved into rough walls of the cave and into other areas that are around the parking lot."

Easter Scene.
"Most of them have excerpts from the scriptures carved in as well, but their wording is different that the King James Version that we know."

Carving Excerpt: She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me." But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out . . .

"All in all there are about 6 cathedrals in that spot. They would be quite comfortable places to go on hot days since they are actually caves. I had Paul take a picture of one that was in a lower
spot than the others, that had the floor covered with small straw rugs. I though you would like to see how they mix colors and patterns here."
